ALBUQUERQUE, NM (July 3, 2009)—The chairman of one of the state’s biggest nonprofit fundraising events is aiming to elevate the evening’s impact by applying best practices from the world of business.
Paul Layer of French Mortuary is chairman of the 2010 Rotary Club of Albuquerque del Sol New Mexico Governors Ball. The gala event, put on by the Rotary Club of Albuquerque del Sol, draws more than 500 of New Mexico’s brightest luminaries to the Hyatt Regency Tamaya to raise money for children’s charities. All of New Mexico’s governors past and present are invited, as are governors of the state’s pueblos and the Rotary district’s governor.
Layer brings a deep background in quality management principles, including work with Quality New Mexico, to his role as chair of the event and saw an opportunity to improve the already very successful event. In the course of its history, it has raised more than $400,000 for children’s organizations, and the 2009 Governors Ball was the most successful ever in the event’s seven-year history, bringing in more than $61,000 for the Boy Scouts, the New Mexico Boys and Girls Ranches, and the 501c3 Rotary Club of Albuquerque del Sol Foundation, which supports the service organization’s mission.
“In business, we know that success is just the beginning,” Layer said. “Using quality techniques, we can find efficiencies, expand the possibilities and ensure that we don’t lose any of the lessons we learn from one year to the next.”
Layer cites a number of factors in his decision to use the principles, including the fact that several club members are QNM members and have received QNM recognition, including Kirkland Federal Credit Union as a Zia winner, Don Chalmers Ford as a Zia winner and French Funeral and Cremation as a double Pinon recipient. Some of the specific changes he is implementing include:
• Each of the 20 Committees now has a Process in place, a chairman and an understudy so that succession is secured
• Each of the Processes answers the Who, What, When , Where , How and Why of each activity.
• Each Process is driven by a year long calendar broken down by week, so that each of the 52 weeks of the year has targets and goals for every action step throughout the year
• There is also a committee listing with who is doing what and HOW every action is to be carried out. It is then cross-referenced to the calendar so that every action corresponds to a time frame and cycle time.
• The action items are distributed to as many RDS members as possible so that individual actions and efforts are minimized, cross learning is achieved and integration is deeper than if only a few members were doing all the work. Also, in this way, members will be able to move into other roles in the future with minimal training, down time, or loss of continuity
“With this extraordinary effort by Paul and the continued support of our Community, we are looking at this as an opportunity to continue the year-over-year growth we’ve seen consistently with this event,” said Tom Wallis, del Sol Club President.
The Governors Ball is a black-tie optional event featuring exceptional live entertainment, a live auction, and catering by the Hyatt Regency Tamaya, which provides a beautiful backdrop for the evening’s festivities. This year’s event will be held Feb. 27, 2010, at the Hyatt Regency Tamaya and will feature a big band theme. The Rotary Club of Albuquerque del Sol is one of the Albuquerque area’s smallest, but the club recently turned in the second-highest state total ever of Paul Harris Fellowships–an honor from donors contributing $1,000 or more. The club also announced its “2020 Vision” program, which aims to ensure a $1 million endowment for the group’s foundation by that year. Like other Rotary Clubs, it is dedicated to promoting human connections and answering needs around the world. Internationally, Rotary has helped to tackle such problems as polio and clean water supplies.
