From the great Carl Zimmer comes a link to a beautiful video of a siphonophore. (Click through jump to watch.) It includes soundtrack from the scientist who has discovered many new species of these beings, each of which is more analogous to a beehive than a fish—a siphonophore is a colony of many separate clones, groups of which do different life-sustaining tasks.
This is what a good day is like for a science writer—somebody passionate and knowledgeable letting you see some of the beauties and insights they’ve won from parts of the universe you never knew about, or never noticed.
Beautiful. If you made it up for, say, Avatar, no one would believe it.
