bq. @preciseedit: The most popular search term to find our blog: “coffee” – followed closely by “1 sentence paragraph” and “escher day and night”
Coffee is more than a drink–it is an organizing principle of a certain kind of culture. I’m inspired to write this because, after I saw this post from a friend, I realized that many of my followers on Twitter have found me through mentions of coffee. In fact, I eventually put “coffee drinker” in my Twitter bio because I found it such a good way of identifying myself to people who might be interested in me.
Why is that? Well, coffee has many mysteries. It has been suggested (perhaps most comically by Pynchon in Mason & Dixon) that coffee, and more specifically coffeehouse culture, actually contributed to the American Revolution. I can believe it. Coffee foments. It is a known performance enhancer with remarkably few side-effects and even, research is finding, many benefits–even in large amounts. It requires a ritual to produce and time to cool and savor. It is an acquired taste, which automatically rules some people out of the club.
In any case, I say, Why look a gift bean in the mouth? I love the experience of coffee, and I love the people it connects me with. Why question that? Maybe it’s my hard wiring or maybe it’s growing up with coffee fiends, but I love the slightly frenzied atmosphere that coffee creates–productivity just seems to percolate out of it.
Are you a coffee lover? Care to take a shot at why it unites us? Comments welcomed. Thanks as always for reading. Now, to run and get another cup …
